Business Card Design: 4 Basic Principles

Even in an increasingly digital world, business cards continue to be a valuable way to pass the name of your business, product or service on to prospective clients. We have compiled a list of basic principles to help separate your business card from the rest of the crowd.

The fundamentals. The typical business card size is 85mm x 55mm. All copy should be at least 5mm away from the card’s edges. Given the minute size of usable space here, business card design should be free of clutter with large, readable text. Also, a business card’s color scheme should work within standard CMYK parameters.

Keep related items together. A business card needs to be concise and organized. To this end, all of the card’s elements should be arranged into logical groups. For instance, the company’s name and/or logo would be in one group and contact information (phone number, e-mail and website addresses) would be in another. Organizing the layout in this way enhances your card’s intelligibility and coherence.

Contrast. As in most areas of creative design, contrast can be an immensely beneficial tool to keep in mind here to get your card to stand out and catch the eye of a prospective client. To achieve a level of contrast that results in an exciting and dynamic visual appearance, you might consider using diverse fonts, varied text sizes and color combinations that compliment one another.

Consistency. Although contrast is a necessary factor, consistency is also essential in order to convey a sense of uniformity within the design of your business card. Although they might sound like conflicting ideas, it is possible to utilize both concepts in a harmonized fashion. For instance, to promote consistency within the different groups that populate your card, give each item in a given group the same font and size.

There are many options when it comes to differentiating your business cards from that of your competition. Some of these might include such impressive touches as implementing a double-sided design, thicker card stock or a lavish finish. However, we believe it’s important to know the basics of business card design so as to successfully create a card that is both memorable and striking.
